YES ON PROP 11: PUT THE VOTERS BACK IN CHARGE
As Voter Information Guides and absentee ballots are hitting mailboxes across the state, AARP is asking California voters to vote YES on Proposition 11. We are working hard to pass this measure because it will put voters back in control -- compelling legislators to work on behalf of voters instead of their own self-interest.
We face a crucial time in California's history and we need leaders in Sacramento ready to find common ground on serious solutions to these issues. Health care reform, chronic budget deficits, improving education and so many other important issues remain unaddressed in Sacramento while the problems continue to get worse.
A seldom-discussed process called redistricting is one of the main culprits. The current system lets legislators draw their own district lines, determining their own political futures by picking their own voters to ensure their re-election.
Proposition 11, a fair redistricting reform proposal on the November ballot, will go a long way toward changing this--for the better. It takes the power away from the legislators and puts it back in the hands of the voters, where it belongs.
This reform is so important that more than 1,700 organizations and leaders representing every walk of life have come together to support this measure, including AARP, California Common Cause, and the League of Women Voters. AARP urges you to vote YES on Proposition 11.
